Reading a book about cycling which has a section on training. Suggests conducting a cycle test to assess level of fitness. Goes something like this:
Step 1: - 3 mile flat course identified
Step 2: - No eating for 2 hours before test and 40 mins before take a high-carb drink
Step 3: - Warm up for between 10 & 20 mins, riding hard enough to sweat, but not as hard as you can
Step 4: - Start by having someone hold the bike and you in the riding position ready to go
Step 5: - Start the clock. Set off and get in a gear that allows a cadence of 80 to 90 rpm
Step 6: - Settle into a rhythm. Apparently if it does not hurt you ain't going fast enough
Step 7: - Finish 3 miles and stop the clock
Step 8: - Cool down with 15 - 30 mins of easy pedaling
Thinking about giving this a go if others are interested. The roads near Tees Valley airport and up to Long Newton are long, flat & straight, unless someone knows somewhere better?
